As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • I certify and take responsibility, as a submitter of this manuscript, that the research contained herein has followed appropriate ethics processes, IRB or otherwise, in the country where the research took place.
  • The manuscript has not been previously published, nor is it in review at another journal or publisher
  • The submission has been combined into a single document with the following items in order:
    a. Title
    b. Abstract
    c. Key words
    d. Body of manuscript
    e. References (if needed)
    f. Tables and figures (if included; in situ is acceptable)
  • The manuscript has been blinded so that self-references are replaced with blinded references in-text and on the reference page (i.e., Author, 20XX; Author 1 & XXXX, 20XX)
  • A cover page (for attachment as a supplementary document) is prepared which contains the following information: Paper Title, Author(s) with the corresponding author clearly identified, University Affiliation of the Author(s), Full Contact Information of Author(s) including Address, Email, and Phone Number, and a suggestion for two potential reviewers and their contact information who have expertise specific to your manuscript and are active in the field; when attached as a supplementary document, the editors will NOT forward this information to the reviewers
  • The manuscript file is in Microsoft Word, RTF, WordPerfect, or PDF document file format
  • The text is double-spaced in 12-point font with page numbers on each page
  • The manuscript does not exceed the word count limits posted on the “Submission Overview” instructions

This journal does not charge fees for article submission, processing, or publication.


General Guidelines


Manuscripts should conform to APA (6th edition) formatting style and should adhere to the word length criteria indicated below. We prefer submissions typed in MS word with the layout being as simple as possible.


As Author, you have responsibility to secure permissions that may be needed to reproduce material created by other people, including images and text quotations. It may also be necessary for you to request permission to reprint your own previously published work. Please ensure that you have secured the proper permissions prior to submitting your manuscript. Upon acceptance of your manuscript, proof of permission may be required.


Featured Articles


These are research-based articles with applications for teaching. Whether primary or secondary research, these should be well-grounded in appropriate and relevant theory, prior research, and/or practice.



  • Length should be approximately 7,500 words; no more than 8,000 words (include tables, charts, and references in that word count)

  • Articles should be structured to include the following elements of a research paper, though they may use different terminology:  Abstract (200 word limit), Key Words, Introduction, Literature Review, Research Questions, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion, Citations

  • Please include a separate cover page (attached as a supplementary document) with the following information:  Paper Title, Author(s) with the corresponding author clearly identified, University Affiliation of the Author(s), Full Contact Information of Author(s) including Address, Email, and Phone Number, and a suggestion for two potential reviewers and their contact information who have expertise specific to your manuscript and are active in the field

  • Please remove all references to the Author(s) in the body of the text. Replace any reference to an Author with the words “Author 1”, “Author 2”, etc. 


Teaching Articles


These are reports on action-research or other short projects with a strong pedagogical emphasis. The results should be something that teachers could immediately apply in order to improve their response techniques to student writing.



  • Length should be approximately 3,000 words; no more than 5,000 words

  • Articles should be structured to include the following elements, though they may use different terminology:  Abstract (200 word limit), Key Words, Introduction, Context, Materials or Methods, Discussion, Suggestions or Applications, Citations

  • Please include a separate cover page (attached as a supplementary document) with the following information:  Paper Title, Author(s) with the corresponding author clearly identified, University Affiliation of the Author(s), Full Contact Information of Author(s) including Address, Email, and Phone Number, and a suggestion for two potential reviewers and their contact information who have expertise specific to your manuscript and are active in the field

  • Please remove all references to the Author(s) in the body of the text. Replace any reference to an Author with the words “Author 1”, “Author 2”, etc. 


Reaching Across the Divide


Debates and “Reaching Across the Divide” are editorials that highlight agreements and disagreements among the domains of Composition, Applied Linguistics, and Second and Foreign Language teaching.



  • Length should be approximately 2,000 words; no more than 3,000 words

  • Articles should be structured to include the following elements, though they may use different terminology:  Abstract (200 word limit), Key Words, Introduction, Assumptions or Background, Discussion, Conclusions, Citations

  • Please include a separate cover page (attached as a supplementary document) with the following information:  Paper Title, Author(s) with the corresponding author clearly identified, University Affiliation of the Author(s), Full Contact Information of Author(s) including Address, Email, and Phone Number, and a suggestion for two potential reviewers and their contact information who have expertise specific to your manuscript and are active in the field

  • Please remove all references to the Author(s) in the body of the text. Replace any reference to an Author with the words “Author 1”, “Author 2”, etc. 


Book Reviews


Book reviews are solicited and unsolicited and provide instructive reviews of very current books dealing with any type of response to writing.



  • Length should be approximately 500 words; no more than 1,500 words

  • Please include a separate cover page (attached as a supplementary document) with the following information:  Paper Title, Author(s) with the corresponding author clearly identified, University Affiliation of the Author(s), Full Contact Information of Author(s) including Address, Email, and Phone Number

  • Please also include information about the book to be reviewed, including:  Title, Author, Publisher, Price (if known), Edition, Page Range.
